JeromeDL Roadmap for GUT

this page will list all features that is required and are supposed to be delivered by GUT

Polish translation available here

Description Guidelines

  • provide general description of each deliverable
  • describe the deliverable as a delta over existing features, not a completly new feature
  • indicate what can be gained (by GUT and Pomerania region in particular) with each deliverable}
  • estimate deliverable costs [in man/months]

Complete support for OAI

to be delivered within JeromeDL Working Group Project

  • list features that should be supported - contact dLibra people
  • provide detailed specification (or link to it) of required features

Querying subnetworks

  • allow users to specify which subnetworks/library instances they would like to query
  • should affect:
    • native ELP protocol
    • OAI protocol in general
    • dLibra instances in particular
  • it is intended to be delivered based on Semantic Overlay Networks propotype for HyperCuP Lightweigh Implementation project
    • as a part of this deliverable new version of HLI with integrated SON will be delivered

Becoming a BRICKS unit

  • BRICKS project is one of the largest EU initiatives for cultural heritage
  • From the technological point of view it is interesting since:
    • the baseline communication is OAI
    • the infrastructure is build with semantics in mind (therefore we call it a semantic digital library, one of few existing solutions)
    • there is a will to deliver a semantic OAI for better communication with system like JeromeDL
    • their P2P infrastructure seems to be compatible with HLI
  • the idea is to wrap JeromeDL with services that would make it acting as one of bricks
  • the benefits:
    • better visibility of our own project
    • becoming part of a large community
    • gaining access to a large information space
    • getting involved in an interesting, EU-wide research

Support for Multimedia

to be delivered within JeromeDL Working Group Project

  • both DERI and GUT raised a requirement on multimedia support for JeromeDL
    • for DERI, it is the e-Learning content, such as videos with tutorials, that is interesting to handle
    • for GUT, it is the radio broadcast recordings (SAR)
  • although we could support these formats through our SWF support in JeromeDL, there is an opportunity to do more:
    • provide a plugin (Macromedia Flash) that would play the content
    • support various content though the plugin:
      • video files
      • mp3/ogg files
      • video and audio streams
      • DRM-protected files (later)
      • DRM-protected streams (later)
    • support for semantic annotations
      • librarians could attach auxiliary information sources (links, images, other library resources) to particular time-frame of the multimedia
      • fragments of the multimedia could be annotated with KOS (knowledge organization systems - controlled vocabulary: thesauri, taxonomies, and authority files)
      • annotations of fragments could be used to provide zoom-in feature during the search
    • support for community annotations
      • enhance blogging support in JeromeDL with time tagging
      • that would require some filtering on the blogging content
      • encourage users to blog with both semantic annotations, KOS and auxiliary information - to enhance the multimedia content
  • the player plugin should allow to notify the user about the content
    • appropriate to the time of the movie or audio is at
    • in non-distracting way
    • the user should be able to stop the multimedia, read the auxiliary information, and resume afterwards

Support for Images/Photos

to be delivered within JeromeDL Working Group Project

  • although JeromeDL has support for collections of images, there are some important features missing:
    • support for a single image/photo
    • support for semantic annotations (+KOS) of Regions of Interests (imagine Flickr with semantic annotations)
    • searching for images/photos
  • the supported feature should be delivered through either DHTML/Ajax component or Flash Component or both (for security reasons Flash version might be interesting to have)
  • ESP game:
    • in order to encourage users to annotate images JeromeDL could give community points, for every annotation that would be matching annotations of other users
    • users can trade their community points for advanced image search, or other features (access to video annotations, other ideas?)
    • users do not see others' annotations until they will provide enough matching annotations for given photo
    • we use annealing technique - the more annotations about given ROI is matching the more accurate/reliable it is
    • it would be a nice testbed for fuzzy semantic annotations, and how we could use them
    • the same game can be applied to multimedia annotations
  • another feature: blogging with ROI-tags

Help to Semantic Features for Average User

  • current User Guide is too high level when it comes to explaining semantic features in details
  • there is a need to deliver a Semantic Features in JeromeDL for Dummies kind of guide
  • this deliverable will have to be delivered both in Polish and English (for the start)
  • also current User Guide will be translated into Polish
  • based on the Semantic Features in JeromeDL for Dummies a context help for JeromeDL will be delivered

DjVu Support

Integrate Social Semantic Search and Browsing component

to be delivered within S3B Working Group Project

  • in short this deliverable will:
    1. refactor semantic query expansion and SSCF out of JeromeDL
    2. merge it together with MultiBeeBrowse into a S3B platform
    3. and link it back to allow search and browsing in JeromeDL
